The Gebirgsjager, as well as many of the light German infantry, were forced to use a variety of equipment that was decidedly “un-motorized.” The GJ was an expert, not only at dealing with rough terrain on an individual level, but as to the use of pack animals. Most artillery and other heavy equipment could be broken down into smaller parts to allow pack trains to carry the equipment over terrain unfit for vehicles. During the winter months a great use of skis, snow shoes, sleds, Akias, and other cold weather equipment was put to use. During 1942, the Finns sent special trainers to German to assist the German and Hungarian armies in dealing with the extreme cold and deep snow. The above picture is of a supply patrol, sent out to a string of outposts, bringing them supplies the only way that it could happen, on foot and towed there by sled. |
